Use this piecing technique with different papers, stencils and inks for completely different "quilt" designs.

    Photo  WINDOWS MEDIA VIDEO
Love the look of an heirloom country quilt? Use paper piecing to achieve the same effect on your scrapbook pages. Watch this video to see designer Judy Joyce demonstrate the technique.

Designer Judy Joyce uses paper piecing for a more down-home, traditional project: a page with the look of a calico quilt.

    Materials:

    Octagonal Tiles stencil
    Diamond Pattern stencil
American Traditional Stencils Stencil Pattern 1
American Traditional Stencils Stencil Pattern 2
    3/16" stencil brushes
    3/8" stencil brushes
    Cream cardstock
    Coral cardstock
    Pale green cardstock
Pigment Stamp Ink, assorted shades (in this example, peacock, celadon, parchment, coral, moss green and yellow are used)
    Memory markers
    Paper trimmer or scissors
    Double-sided adhesive mount
    Low-tack masking tape
Black 10" or 12" album page
4" square photo or photo copy

    1. Begin by mounting photo on 6" square of green paper, securing with adhesive mount. Mount this square to center of album page and set aside.

    2. Next, move on to the creation of "quilt" pieces. Use low-tack tape to fasten the octagonal tiles stencil to a 4" x 5" piece of cream cardstock. Use a 3/8" inch to stencil first and third octagon of top row with celadon green ink (or color of your choice). Stencil second and fourth octagon or second row with peacock ink. Continue this pattern to the bottom of stencil. Stencil all remaining openings with parchment ink.

    3. Then, leaving stencil in place, layer the flowered section of the Pattern 1 stencil over the octagonal stencil and secure. Stencil flowers onto the parchment colored octagonal openings (figure A), using peacock for flowers and moss green for leaves. Move pattern stencil down as needed to cover remaining octagons.

    4. Remove the Pattern 1 stencil, and replace with Pattern 2 stencil. Stencil all peacock and celadon octagons with flowers using coral ink. Allow to dry.

    5. Next, to create a second quilt pattern, attach the diamond pattern stencil to 4" x 5" piece of coral paper. Stencil openings with parchment ink. Layer flowers from Pattern 2 stencil over the diamond openings, then stencil with peacock, moving stencil as needed. Remove both stencils and reposition diamond pattern over un-stenciled areas.

    6. Add dots of color with markers as desired, then cut each piece of paper into 2" squares. Cut squares diagonally into triangles.

    7. Match triangles into pairs (using one of each pattern) to make four large triangles. Mount the matched triangles onto adhesive, then trim away excess backing.

    8. Peel backing away and affix triangles around the matted photograph on the scrapbook page (figure B)

    9. Journal or title as desired.
